Why the Old Ghanaian Methods Don’t Work (And Can Cause More Trouble!)

For many years, people have tried to fight rust with things they find in the kitchen. We call these home remedies.

  • What you do: You pour strong bleach on the rust stain on your white clothes.

  • The Problem: Bleach is very good at making things white, but rust is a special kind of stain. Bleach can actually make some rust stains change color and become worse, turning them brownish-yellow and making them almost impossible to remove later. Also, if you use bleach on a colored cloth, the color is gone forever! You have saved the rust, but you have killed the shirt. This is a very bad trade.

  • What you do: You squeeze a lemon, put the juice and some salt on the stain, and then leave it outside in the hot sun.

  • The Problem: The acid in the lemon is weak. It might make the stain a little lighter, but it usually doesn’t take the whole rust out. Worse, leaving the fabric in the hot sun for too long can fade the color of your nice print. So, you fix one problem (a little bit of the rust) and create a new, bigger problem (a faded, ugly patch).

When a problem is special like a stain in your cloth or shoe, you need a special solution. You cannot use general cleaning tools for a special cleaning job.
